Right to Information (RTI)

The fundamental objective of the RTI Act is to promote equality among citizens, focus on accountability, and promote transparency. The Right to Information Act, 2005 gives power to the citizens to get access to information from any public authority. To ensure the proper follow up of RTI, the Public Information Officer (PIO) plays a key role in ensuring the applicant of RTI gets the desired information in the most authentic manner. Below factors primarily focused while handling the application under the RTI act.

Information generally stands for any type of material with any form. It covers documents, emails, records, advice, memos, press, release, logbooks, papers, models, reports, etc.

Right to Information under the Act
  1. Under this act, a citizen has a right to request information from a public authority.
  2. This covers certified copies, documents, records, and inspection of work.
  3. A citizen has the right of availing the information in the form of floppies, video cassettes, diskettes, tapes or any other electronic mode.
  4. The RTI act, 2005 gives the right to information only for the Indian citizens.
  5. The information to the application should be provided in the form it is sought.
Fee for Seeking Information

An applicant, along with a filed application required to pay the standard demand draft or Indian Postal Order which is payable to the accounts department of the public authority.

Format of Application

The applicant for RTI is not required to mention any reason for seeking the information except the details required for contacting the applicant.

Invalid Application

After filing the RTI application, the PIO carries out the verification of whether the application is in proper format and the applicant has made the payment. In case the applicant has not paid the fee as prescribed the application cannot be treated as a valid RTI application.
